Sightseeing and Activities

The Loire is one of the most beautiful and historic regions in France.

Although it is impossible to list all the sights and actvities, this page gives a short summary of popular sights and their driving time from Les Bouchettes.

The sights are listed in four categories:
- Local excursions less than 60 minutes drive
- Day trips less than 2 hours drive
- Day trips to the coast
- Leisure activities and family attractions (fun parks etc.)

Local excursions (less than 1 hr drive)
  Doue-la-Fontaine  7 mins Doue has an unusual zoo set on two levels. This is one of the area's top tourist attractions. The town is also famous for its rose gardens and troglodyte sites.

 

Le Puy Notre Dame

 4 mins Charming  wine-growing village in the heart of the Saumur vineyards. Known as 'The Ancient Town of Character' with magnificent 12th century Colliegial Church. Also famous for the Retro Grand Prix held in July each year where the streets are lines with straw bales; a typical French event replicating Grand Prix's of old!!!!
  Montreuil-Bellay  10 mins Ville Fleurie with an imposing medieval chateau with gorgeous river walks.
  Rochemenier  10 mins Visit the famous Troglodyte village; see how people used to live!!
  Saumur  20 mins Chateau town and home of the Cadre Noir. Renowned for its wines, shopping, markets and Loire River.
  Chateau Breze  20 mins Sixteenth century chateau with underground chambers and tunnels.
  Chateaux Brissac  30 mins Extravagant chateau located between Doue and Angers
                 
                                     
  Montsoreau
Candes St Martin
 
 35 mins Classified in the category of "Plus Beaux Villages de France", these picturesque villages are situated at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers.
Montsoreau chateau has been turned into an elaborately presented and child-friendly museum.
  Abbaye de Fontevraud  40 mins The tombs of the Plantagenet royal family are at the heart of this stunning Romanesque abbey and monastry complex.
  Richelieu  45 mins  
  Chateaux Montgeoffroy  45 mins Perfectly preserved 17th century chateau. Located between Angers and Saumur.
  Angers  45 mins The capital of the historic Anjou region boasts numerous attractions including its chateau, the tapestry of the apocalypse, the cathedral, a number of museums and of course 'shopping'.
  Chinon  45 mins  Lovely old town with streets of character and famous market.
